The area - Guanabara Bay - and what later became center of Rio were
discovered in 1502.
As a gateway to minerals, coffee, and sugar the bay and city of Rio
de Janeiro became an important trade route.
As the city we know today it started its formation at a much later time.
Only in the 19th century did the city start getting formed as a city
with social structures
and getting expanded as a result increased forms of transportation.
Making Rio de Janeiro a very new city. With only a little over 11.000
people living in Lagoa in Zona Sul in 1870.
